04-19-11 Dog park Subcmte
Newtown Parks and Recreation Dog Park Subcommittee
4/19/2011  meeting notes:
In attendance: Benay Yaffe, Susan Washburn, RoseAnn Reggiano, Mary Ann Viesto,
Becky Dvorin ,   Joy Brewster,  Janice Butler,  Monica Roberto, Kathryn Simonds and Kendra Bobowick from The Bee.
Topics and notes:
Update on land for dog park:  Reggiano shared the preliminary drawing by the engineer.  Questions on the height of the fence the location of gates and amenities were answered by her.  The plan is showing 1125 linear feet of 4-ft high fence. Reggiano to price out 4’ and 5’ fencing options.  Concerns over the height to ‘keep dogs in’ were met with comments that at dog parks  most dogs stay/want in, even with 4’ fencing. An alternate though similar layout was proposed by Joy Brewster.  Both designs were enthusiastically reviewed. One point agreed by the majority was that the entry apron should be concrete or asphalt until we can coordinate selling donor bricks.  Inquiries on limiting access to Newtown residents only were answered; ‘there is no staff to enforce such limitations; the park will therefore be self policing.  Suggestion was made to install a lock box with signage to ask out-of-towners to make donations if they use the park.
Sponsorships and REVENUE:  To date we have $14,008.00 in our account.
Vendors:  Fedorchek and Reggiano have secured over 10 paid vendors so far. There is a catering vendor coming as well.  Mt. Pleasant A. H.  will need two tents, one for his business and one for the operation of the micro-chipping and nail trimming fund raiser.
Tee Shirts are being donated by CBTS and Mt Pleasant Animal Hospital.  Lab Rescue would like to offer a fund raising effort of having registered walkers pay to walk a dog at SYM; that is yet to be decided.
Dr. Murray is set to do the Sheepherding demo on the lawn near Washington Sq.

Simonds and Reggiano set to meet with high school Animal Concerns Club on 4/28 to encourage their support and involvement with SYM.

LOGISTICS:  Not discussed much, encouraged group to gain more support and helping hands the day of.
Make lists of things we need: bags, maps, signs.  Simonds presented a preliminary route for the 2k walk and layout of the area, notes made to move JumpRope to level area and we need more room for vendors!

SIGN PLACEMENT /MAPPING OUT THE TOWN:  Based on a town wide map the six volunteers will split up the town evenly.
COMMUNICATIONS:  Article and photo seen in THE BEE and VOICES last week.  Lawn signs going out 4/20, Reggiano to coordinate with P&Z to avoid mishaps of errant signs.  More signs going out after 4/26.  Large thermometer sign moved from Newtown Bait and Tackle to Mt Pleasant A.H., soon to be moved to Wasserman Way location until 5/21, then to Rte 34 area in June.
